Overseas Voyage
In the winter of 1956-57, Mr. Studer decided to realize a longtime dream of his, and immersed himself in the New York jazz scene. He packed up his belongings and took the small cargo ship “Frontenac” overseas. Among his other essentials, he brought his entire collection of shellac records. During the journey, the boat circled all of Spain, stopping at various ports to deliver and pick up cargo. Often the cargo brought aboard was cork, a commodity abundant in Spain. The boat also circled Portugal, running up its Guadalquivir river all the way to Lisbon. The ship was stopped by mud for a while, until it was able to get free and continue its journey. While on board, Studer became well acquainted with the other passengers and he enjoyed the excellent food cooked by the sailors.
