Louis Armstrong
Paul Studer first made acquaintance with Louis Armstrong backstage at a concert in Brooklyn, where Studer was living at the time. This was the same occasion in which Studer met Jeann “Roni” Failows, whom he dated while he was in New York. He spent time with Armstrong on various occasions backstage and in the recording studio. He has good memories of hanging out with Louis, Louis' wife Lucille, and Jeann, at the Armstrongs’ home in Queens. Armstrong was often engaged in making his famous scrapbooks, and sometimes he had his reel-to-reel recorder running, as he was devoted to biographically recording his life. (Studer’s family is very eager to find out if his voice is on any of Armstrong’s famous recordings!)
Armstrong affectionately referred to Studer as "Little Panassie", after Hughes Panassie, founder of Le Hot Club de Jazz, in Europe. Studer also recalls Lucille cooking meals for them, and he found the atmosphere to be friendly and cheerful. Many thanks to Ricky Riccardi and Richard Basi for identifying the musicians.
